. This is the so-called "GRAND RIFLE" made by Jack Garner. The top flat of the barrel is engraved "JONES & GARNER'S GRAND RIFLE." The octagonal barrel is 42" long and .54 caliber. It has a silver blade front sight and a Kentucky style rear sight. The flared breechplug tang is engraved "No 4." Light scroll engraving is also present on the tang. The barrel is nicely browned with all of the brown finish remaining. The stock is made of curly maple with moderate curl all along the forend and slightly less in the buttstock area. Stock is beautifully and smoothly finished with a medium brown coloration. Incise carving is present around the sliding wooden patchbox cover, on either side of the forend at the ramrod entry thimble, and surrounding the breechplug tang. Relief carving is present behind the molded cheekpiece, along the bottom edge of the buttstock and surrounding the lockplate and sideplate mortises. A molding is also carved along the forend extending to the muzzle. Brass furniture includes the buttplate, triggerguard, ramrod thimbles, chevron noseplate and sideplate. Light engraving is present on the sideplate along with an owner's name "JIM COOK." Brass furniture has light tarnish to it. The large Siler flintlock mechanism is nicely browned. A brass flash protector has been attached to the frizzen spring screw. Also included is a leather frizzen cover on a thong attached to the triggerguard. Overall condition is slightly used.
