This little jewel is non-functional, but looks authentic in every way. It is a very nice addition to your 18th Century decor and is sort of worth it for that alone. BUT if you want it to actually throw sparks and light tinder, you will have to do some flintlock gunsmithing. The steps I took can be found at geojohn dot org under the "stories about firearms and shooting" section. Bottom line: I now have a 18th Century tinder lighter that looks great and works as good as it looks. Char cloth will glow on the first or second try and is so much easier than flint and steel. My next step is to make some sulfur tipped spunks.
