This "early" forged-machined sear spring seems to fit all the springfield musket models between 1816 and 1884. The later produced springs may not interchange back however, because of the location and length of the slot in the lockplate to hold against rotation. This makes sense, as old inventory at the armory would never be thrown away if it could be used. Again, this should also fit a trapdoor, but a spring more recently made for a trapdoor might have the index tab in the wrong place for an 1842 and earlier, as aftermarket (Bannerman, et al) replacement springs were made to the existing dimensions of the later lock plate sear spring tab slot.
