I based this naval gun carriage on a detailed drawing of the USS Constitutionメs 24 pounder long guns which I downloaded from http://www.ussconstitution.navy.mil/xlongguns.html. The base is 5 inches long and 2 5/8 inches wide. The bottom arch was shaped on a spindle sander. Front and back axle beams are mounted in transverse dados. The two sides are made separately clamped edge-to-edge and a ᄑ inch hole drilled centered on the seam to form the two half circles which support the barrel bearings. The step-downs were cut with a hand saw and rasp. The side pieces were then glued to the top of the base adding 1 1/8 inch to its height. In 18th century gun carriages the axle beams extended beyond the base and were shaped into round axles about 4 inches in diameter. I opted to cut them flush with the side and bored to receive ᄐ inch dowels which extend through the wheels. The trundle wheels were cut with a hole-saw bit. Hardware (eye-screws; threaded rod; nuts & washers) was off-the-shelf except for the bearing strap which was fashioned by hand from a ᄑ inch shelf brace. This was my first experience building a model and it was a fun project. Based on my research these cannons were about ten feet long which would make the scale about 1/15 rather than 1/8

Oh My God! I had this cannon barrel as a kid and loved it. My next door neighbor gave it too me as a gift (with my father's approval). It produces quite a bang. Great for New Years Eve.

this was the second cannon that I got and what a cannon. the fuse hole is easy to make as well as the finish just alittle sand paper will do. This cannon will make a great project to do with the kids or by yourself.
