This is a 90% done rifle
I just finished assembling the kit. Really it's 90% there when you get it. You have a total of one hole to drill and that's the rear hole for the trigger guard. Every other bolt, screw, etc is already installed. The butt plate screws are temporary screws Philips heads. This is so you can sand and polish the butt plate and the stock at the same time to make it flush. There are four blued wood screws with flat heads to replace the four Philips heads when you are done curving and sanding the butt of the stock to make it match the butt plate and toe plate. The wood on the stock is shaped, even the inlet for the lock requires no work for fitment of the lock. However there is a ridge around the lock on both the lock side and side plate site that you will want to sand down. The brass noes plate had some mold casting marks that I ended up using a belt sander to finish. I didn't know what the description meant by blued but unfinished barrel. They blued the barrel without polishing it first. Surprisingly the crown was fairly rough and in the white. I tried removing the barrel from the stock by unscrewing the tang bolt and pushing out the two 1/16 pins. I think the stock is glued/ bedded to the barrel for extra help. So I ended up using cold blue and a blow torch carefully heating the barrel just to 150F or so for the blue to adhere. Some of the stock got slightly singed but nothing some light sanding couldn't fix. For what it's worth, I'm glad I bought the kit over the finished version. I saved about $300 and it only took me five to six hours of work. Oh I had to install the front and rear sights too. DGW shipped out it very quickly. I would buy from them again. Lock on this rifle is small but well built. The cock in the safety/ half cock position the stock flint is maybe 0.5mm from touching the frizzen. I wish Pedersoli would of set the half cock notch a bit further back to allow for larger flints and so it didn't sit at half cock so close. This lock takes very small flints. 5/8 maybe 1/2 inch sized flints. I'm pretty sure it's the same lock as the Kentucky and Penn rifles. The vent hole sleeve is big and the middle is recessed where the vent hole is. So because it is recessed the frizzen doesn't 100% cover it when the frizzen is closed. It's got about 10% showing. Not too big of a deal but I could see that be a small issue if carrying with pan powder in there while hunting. For the money as long as you know how to do some basic cold bluing and basic wood work skills, as well as know how to install dove tailed sights on a gun, I'd save $300 and buy the kit. I'm looking forward to buying the Penn version with the 41 inch barrel for Christmas if God willing we make it this year.
