I've had my Trade Gun for about 2οΎ½ years. Well made it throws a good shower of sparks and gives fire quickly. While the literature recommends 11 gauge wadding 12 ga. Blue and Gray wads work very well. It shoots .735 ball with a thin lubricated linen patch tolerably well but the .715 ball is much easier to load and is definitely preffered when loading cartridges. 3F powder works well both for the main charge and priming but I use 4f for priming when I use it as a squirrel gun with shot loads. It does pattern tolerable good with #6 shot B&G over powder card cushion shot and over shot card wad load. It is a bit heavy but then it is a musket. However shortening the barrel moves the balance point directly under the lock which makes it a bit awkward to carry in the right hand sometimes. It could also do with the addition of sling swivels (which one can do with after market parts). Great fun!

I've had my copy of the short Brown Bess for several years now. I recall when I first got it the only manufactered choices for balls were .735 and .715. I could barely push the .735s down the barrel and the .715s fell down the barrel. Neither one really worked very well. I decided to get even a little more authentic so I made my own patches from muslin sheet material and saturated the patches with rendered lard. I also had DGW make me one of their custom moulds in .725 round ball. This patch and ball combo over a 100 gr 2F load has been great fun. I used 4F in the pan. The patched .725 ball fits my Bess perfectly. As I said before I've had mine for years... maybe eight or so... and I have no intention of getting rid of it. Any shooting enthusiast who also enjoys blackpowder and history must get one.

This is an excellent flintlock musket. Mine has above average grain in the stock. The fit and finish are excellent. Plenty of sparks and ignition. I would not hesitate to buy another one if needed or recommend this gun. Great loaded as a .12 guage shot gun (BP Wads and over the shot card) also great with patched round ball.
