Most coins minted under the auspices of the Confederacy were actually United States coins as the Confederacy, continued during the war, to mint coins in the occupied Federal mints using the existing Federal dies. The coins in this seat are actual Confederate designs. The Confederate cent bears the original Lovett design on both it’s obverse and reverse. The additional denominations are also based on the authentic design. The set contains the Lovett Confederate cent, Confederate half dollar as stuck at the New Orleans Mint in 1861, and $5 “Golden” cavalier and $20 “Golden” quadruple cavalier as proposed by Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin. As the Confederacy minted coins only during the early part of 1861, our Commemorative Confederate “Coins” bear an 1861 date; each is stamped “COPY” with the exception of one cent piece.

Excellent little piece of history especially for a Southerner. My set was crisp and clearly minted. The included history/facts sheet was a welcome bonus. This would have made a nice set for a shadowbox IF they had thrown in a replica paper Confederate bill. Still a nice collection to wow your Yankee friends with.
