Painting by John Trumbull (1756-1843) The Declaration of Independence proved to be the most important work of John Trumbull’s life. He collaborated with Thomas Jefferson to make this painting beginning in 1787 – not finishing until 1820. The men are depicted sitting on the ground floor of the old State House (Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776 with Thomas Jefferson handing the Declaration to John Hancock for signing.
