An excellent representation of the coat of arms used in Great Britain from the ascension of George I in 1714 until 1801, when Ireland became part of the United Kingdom. This was the Royal Coat of Arms of George I, George II, and George III. The shield is quartered; upper left represents England and Scotland; upper right France; lower left, Ireland; and lower right, the Kingdom of Hanover. The crest consists of the crown of England, the supporters are the crowned lion for England and fettered unicorn for Scotland. The shield is surrounded by the badge of the Order of the Garter, bearing the old Latin motto, “Honi soit qui mal y pense.” (Evil to him who evil thinks.) At the bottom of the shield is a motto on a ribbon normally decorated with a rose (the badge of England) and a thistle (badge of Scotland), “Dieu et mon Droit” (God and my right.”) This statement is said to have been uttered in 1340 by Edward III when he began the Hundred Years’ War to obtain the crown of France, which he believed rightfully belonged to him by inheritance.
