This one is somewhat unusual configuration in the combination of buttstock, handguard and rear sight. It is .30-40 caliber with 22" tapered round barrel. The exposed portion of the barrel has about 95% of the original military blue finish. The barrel has a standard front sight base but has an ivory bead blade inserted. The rear sight is the correct Model 1896 style. The receiver has most of the original dull military blue finish. It is well marked "U.S./1895. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 25894." Faint original fire blue finish remains on the extractor on top of the bolt. The action works perfectly. The coloration of the magazine housing door is dull bluish gray and smooth with sharp edges and corners. Two "P" in a circle proof marks are present behind the triggerguard which has about 50% original blue finish. The buttplate is the original military style with compartment for cleaning rod. The buttplate has about 60% original blue finish with the balance smooth and gray. A sling swivel base has been added to the bottom edge of the buttstock just ahead of the buttplate. The bore is fine. The inletting for the saddle ring bar on the left side of the stock has been filled and the bar is missing. The stock is the correct short forend style which extends about 11" ahead of the receiver. The handguard however, is a longer style which extends about 1 ½" beyond the barrel band position. The barrel band present on this gun is a split style with an opening on top. The barrel band is retained in the stock by the correct spring. The condition of the buttstock is excellent and the handguard is also excellent but slightly different color. There is evidence of another barrel band have been in place ahead of the handguard at some point and time. Overall condition of the gun is about excellent.
