These lanyards are based on research of original pieces and what has been requested (rather than the military specification of the time) of this manufacturer over the years. Many photos of battles in the field have been examined and you can see that the lanyards in use were shorter than the Quartermaster's requirements. These lanyards are just over 7 feet in length.
The Union lanyard is similar in construction to the Confederate but uses 1/4" cod line as cord. This is three strand hand laid and is period correct - not machine made. Also treated along the length with beeswax to prevent fraying and splices from coming loose.
