This is a Southern Mountain Rifle by Mike Miller of Paducah, Ky. Although this style rifle is plain the quality of workmanship done by this highly regarded and sought after rifle builder makes it one that is very attractive in its own right. The rifle starts with a Rice barrel that is 7/8” x 42” long in 40 caliber with a 1 in 48” twist. The rear sight is an open style browned steel and the front sight is a copper base with a silver blade. The top flat is marked M Miller and the barrel is browned. The flintlock is a Jim Chambers Ketland and features some nice engraving. It was originally polished bright but has now turned grey to light brown. The set trigger is an early style and is single phase only. The furniture of the gun has all been forged by hand and is browned. Furniture consist of triggerguard, toeplate, sideplate, lower thimble with entry tang and 2 upper thimbles. The wood ramrod has one browned steel tip which has 8 x 32 female threads. The stock is Cherry and features an incise carved line along the forearm and lower edge of the buttstock as well as along the raised portion of the cheekpiece. There are 3 staples under the cheekpiece to secure a vent pick which is present. The nosecap has been hand poured from pewter. There is no metal buttplate and a grease hole in the side of the buttstock has grease in it for lubricating patches. Both of these features are typical of a Southern Mountain rifle. Length of pull is 13 ¾” and the weight is 8 ½” lbs. Overall condition is very good.
