I ordered a Lyman Great Plains Rifle in 54 caliber just before the 2003/2004 season. Opening the box I was pleased with the authentic looks and good balance of the rifle. Taking it to the range it wasn't long before the GPR was punching the center of the target out at 50 yards using 110 grains of Goex 2f a .530 round ball and Ox Yoke's Wonder Ticking patches. Florida allowed harvesting of does for four days in November. I was in the hardwoods early AM when three does showed up less than twenty yards away. Placing the sight on the front shoulder of the largest doe I set the trigger and fired. It ran about 60 yards and dropped. The GPR put meat in the pot on the first trip!

This is an excellent first muzzleloader. If you want to shoot roundball and you're not sure which rifle to buy then you can't go wrong with the Lyman GPR. This rifle is authentically styled of excellent quality and is very accurate. A couple of extra coats of True Oil will make this gun look even nicer. This was my first muzzle loader and I highly recommend it!

Purchased this GPR last week first impressions where great very nice wood fit and finish is good for the price I will break it down with pros and cons. Used 530 round balls .10 patch and CCI #11 caps note caps did not fit they were too small may need a differ brand or #10 cap or something a bit larger Pros 1. Nice wood 2. Good fit and finish 3. Accurate barrel 4. Well balanced 5. Authentic looking harken style 6. Double set trigger Cons 1. Trigger when not set is very crunchy with time should be minimized 2. Back sight is poorly cast had to replace it 3. Back butt plate is very very sharp on edges.
