This is a copy of the final evolution of the United States Mounted Rifles holster revolver. It remained the Colt large bore revolver until replaced by the Navy-sized 1960 Army. It was a very popular military and civilian arm and the artist who engraved the cylinder scene wrote about using the Dragoon to shoot Bison from horseback. Our copy is of 2004 production and has the finely tuned/ match-ready action that we see on most of the recent Ubertis. The single glitch with this one was that the loading lever would disengage and drop down with just about every shot. This is a very common occurance and we fixed it by substantially deepening the notch and by pinching the frame to tighten the loading lever assembly. As a matter of preference we also lowered the point of aim/impact by deepening the hammer notch and filing the top surface of the hammer/sight. The revolver regularly fires amazing off-hand group at 60 feet and 25 yards. It hangs steady on the end of one arm and the light trigger makes it easier to shoot accurately than a lot of modern handguns of the sporting and target type. The chambers will take a charge of 50 grains of fffg and with its chamber mouth measurements of .450 it works with .451- .457\" balls. Velocity with 50 grains Goex fffg and a 140 grain .457 ball averaged 980 feet per second while a 200 grain Lee conical bullet over 35 grains did 976 fps. The Dragoon is very pleasant to shoot . The Uberti parts are very well fitted and properly heat treated for reasonable service life. In sharp contrast to the situation just a few years ago spare parts are readily available should the need arise."

Received this very fine revolver cleaned it up and went shooting. Very pleasant indeed good trigger and timed perfectly. I like 45g of Clean-Shot equivalent of fffg w/#10 cap. At 25 yard sit holds very nice groups a few inches above point of aim. Big beefy revolver with punch a real joy to fire.

Right out of the box it has a very nice fit finish and mechanical function. The trigger pull is very nice with a short creep then a snap of the hammer at between two and four pounds of pressure. Everyone including myself really enjoys the sheer size finish and function of the piece. I benched the first six shots with 40 grains of FFFg at 10 yards to get a feel for the sighting picture. It placed all six shots in a three inch group that was three inches above the point of aim. Shooting freehand with the same load distance and little sighting effort the next 18 shots made a group between four and five inches in diameter. Like all cap and ball revolvers firing a shot may dislodge a previously fired cap that then jams the action. Also once in awhile the loading lever may drop and jam the action. This is typical stuff when shooting a revolver that was designed over 160 years ago. My cure is to carry hemostats for the caps and to tie up the loading lever with a strip of leather. The next purchase will be a Uberti Colt Walker.
