This is a very well crafted rifle made possibly by J. V. Speak in the 1970’s. We say possibly because the barrel is marked on the top flat with “J V Speak” and the inside of the lockplate is dated 6-3-72. The caliber is 45. The rifle begins with a 41 ½” G. R. Douglas barrel and is so marked on one of the exposed barrel flats. The barrel is browned and has a dovetailed steel base front sight with a silver blade. The rear sight is a more modern style blued steel full buckhorn target sight with a push type stair step elevator. The rear sight is also dovetailed into the barrel. A filler has been installed in the top flat of the barrel about 5 inches from the breech where the rear sight originally was located. This has been filed and browned to match the barrel and is hardly noticeable. The percussion lock was made by Robbins. It is marked on the inside of the lockplate with H.W. Robbins along with the date mentioned above. It is browned and has a line border engraved around the plate, a small scroll on the hammer nose and what may be a small porcupine under the drum. The triggers are double set double phase. Action is perfect. All furniture is brass consisting of nosecap ,2 upper octagon thimbles, 1 lower thimble with entry tang, trigger guard, toeplate, sideplate, buttplate, and a daisy head patchbox with side panels. The patchbox features a push button release in the toeplate and is engraved on the daisy leaf. There is a little bit of line engraving on the sideplate, lower entry thimble tang and on the 2 lower tennon pin inlays. The stock is maple showing good curl throughout. Color of the stock is a pleasing reddish brown. There is an incise line along the length of the forearm ending in a curl at the lower tang. There is also a raised lock border in front of the lock panels as well as a raised border along the lower part of the buttstock and around the comb and wrist areas. Raised relief carving is around and behind the tang as well as in front of and behind the cheekpiece. Overall length is 57 ½”. Length of pull 14”. Weight 7 ½ lbs.
