Converted from the cavalry model. 26" round barrel is attached to the stock by two brass barrel bands. The upper band has a double loop with the front sight located on the forward loop. The barrel is medium gray in color with some brown staining but no real pitting present. Proof marks at the breech are excellent and the breechplug tang is dated 1851. Small stud is located on the bottom of the barrel just behind the muzzle for attachment of a bayonet. Trumpet shaped ramrod is present and appears to be old. Walnut stock is somewhat dark and shows moderate wear overall. Very faint evidence of cartouche is present on the left side of the stock. Brass sideplate is present and has the hole for the sling bar filled. Brass buttplate and triggerguard also. Sling swivel is located on a brass base on the bottom of the stock just ahead of the buttplate. Sling swivel is also located on the lower barrel band. Lockplate is well marked with a small eagle over "US" ahead of the hammer and "SPRING/FIELD/1853" behind the hammer. Lock action works perfectly. Overall condition is very good plus.
