A round or crescent shaped ornament worn beneath the neck, popular during the Indian trade of the 17th – 18th centuries, has a long and time honored lineage. From a vital piece of armor of the medieval knight, the gorget evolved to represent a symbol of rank among European army officers, and through the struggle of European powers for control of a continent, was passed on to the Indian trade. Plain nickled gorget is crescent shaped, aprox. 4 5/8” X 2 ½”. Hole on either side for ribbon on thong. Highly polished.
