This accessory was part of every 18th century woman’s wardrobe. Pockets were flat pear-shaped bags with vertical slit openings. They tied around the waist; worn beneath the gown or skirt. Placket openings in the outer garment gave access to the pocket, which provided storage space for needles, thread, pins and other useful items the lady wanted to have at hand. Our representation is sewn from muslin, lined for extra strength. It is 15” long, 11” at the widest point and the slit is an ample 8 ¼” long. Our seamstress has elected to make these without the waistband tape attached. A casing is provided; simple insert your choice of ribbon or cloth tape through this casing. Pockets can be worn as a single unit or in pairs. It was a common practice in the 18th century to decorate them with needlework as this would greatly compliment our pockets.
