Painting by Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952) Howard Chandler Christy was an illustrator, portraitist, and mural painter who periodically painted for government entities and officials including Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the late 1930s Christy painted a twenty by thirty foot oil work entitled “Signing the Constitution” which was dedicated in 1940 and now hangs in the U.S. Capitol. It took three years of research and six months to paint. It depicts 38 founders and one secretary signing the Constitution into law on May 14, 1787 at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
