.45 caliber rimfire. The tapered round barrel is 26" long. It has a blade front sight on a large base which is dovetailed into the barrel and a standard ladder style rear sight. Externally, the barrel is dull gray and brown but smooth with no pitting. Bore is very good. Action works well. The original curved lever has been bent and is oddly shaped. This could be easily repaired or the lever replaced. The receiver is also dull gray and brown in color and is well marked on top with Spencer address and patent information. Edges and corners are fairly sharp. No saddle ring or plate has ever been attached to the left side of the frame. Visible serial number is 1853 on the tang. Two holes have been drilled for the attachment of a tang sight and possibly removed some of the serial number. Serial number stamped under the barrel is 11853. Forend is attached by two screws and has a pewter nosecap. It is made of fairly straight grain walnut. The buttstock is finely figured but is quite dark. It has nice shaping work done around the comb which is different from the military rifle. Tubular magazine located in the buttstock is intact. Military style buttplate. Overall condition of the gun is very good.
