Made by John Bergmann of Granville, Tennessee. One of the fancier guns that I have seen John make. Overall length is 52”. The straight octagonal barrel is 36” long. It has a dark dull blue finish with 100% of that finish remaining. It is mounted with a silver blade front sight and a Hawken style fixed rear sight. Both sights are dovetailed into the barrel. Barrel is signed in script on top of the barrel with the maker’s name “J.F. BERGMANN.” Both the muzzle and the breech of the barrel are inlaid with silver bands. The hook style patent breech and tang are both color casehardened as is the lock mechanism and the triggerguard. The breechplug, tang, lockplate, hammer and triggerguard are all nicely engraved. The lock is a typical Hawken style front action. The halfstock is made of curly maple which is stained to a medium brown color. Nice curl figure is present over the entire length of the stock. The barrel is attached to the stock by two flat barrel keys which are fire blued. Barrel keys are surrounded by German silver escutcheons on each side. There is a pewter nosecap attached to the front of the buttstock. A solid steel underrib is attached beneath the barrel with two steel thimbles housing a wooden ramrod. The ramrod entry thimble on the stock at the nose is also browned steel. The Hawken style buttplate is also browned as is the toeplate and sidelock screw escutcheon. Fancy open work hinged patchbox is present which is also nicely engraved. A German silver inlay is present on top of the comb extending forward from the buttplate tang. A large oval German silver inlay is present on the molded cheekpiece and engraved with the American eagle. Double set triggers are present. Caliber is .54. Overall condition is new.
