This is an American made gun in the style of the British Brown Bess. The massive flintlock mechanism measures 6 7/8” in length. The lockplate is convex with a simple double line border engraving. The lock mechanism is in original flintlock configuration although the iron pan is made separately from the plate itself. The surfaces are smooth and dull gray with some very light roughness present. Large gooseneck hammer has the same two line border engraving applied to it. Lock works well. The lock is inletted into a beautiful cherry fullstock which is in fine condition. The stock design generally conforms to a British Brown Bess. The swell in the stock is present around the ramrod entry thimble. The stock has a pleasing smooth finish with nice patina. It does have a few light scratches from wear. The wrist of the stock is nicely checkered and there is a carved band surrounding the breechplug tang. A bead is carved around the lockplate and sideplate mortises and a beautifully delicate drop point is present on each side behind the lock and sideplate. The stock is mounted with brass furniture including the buttplate, thick brass Brown Bess style triggerguard, three ramrod thimbles, a band at the forward portion of the stock and a 2nd Model flat sideplate with tail extending behind the sidelock screw. A hole is present in the triggerguard bow for a sling swivel which is not present. The tapered round barrel is 40 5/8” long and has a nice dull brownish gray color. The barrel is smooth overall with very light pitting around the lock and touch hole area. Turned rings are present at the breech and a small stud front sight is present at the muzzle. No proof marks are present. A steel ramrod is housed beneath the barrel. Overall condition is very fine.
