The 1866 Winchester was developed from the Henry and production began in 1866. It differs from the Henry, however, by having a loading gate on the side of the action, a wooden forearm and a separate tublar magazine. Called the "Yellow Boy" by the Indians, the 1866 is the most deserving of the name, "The Gun Than Won The West."

European walnut buttstock and forearm with satin finish. 3 1/2" drop. 13" trigger pull. Barrel is blued, 24 1/4" tapered octagon - .860" at breech to .750" at muzzle. Cut rifling .003" deep, 6 lands .394 and 6 grooves .400. 1 in 20" twist. Caliber is .38/40. Front sight - blued steel base and blade, 3/8" dovetail. Rear sight - blued steel, semi-buckhorn, open style w/push elevator, 3/8" dovetail. 13 capacity magazine. Features a brass frame, buttplate and nosecap. Color casehardened hammer and lever.
