This is a very well made Hawken rifle. It has a 32” browned octagon barrel with browned steel underrib and 2 thimbles. The barrel is 56 caliber with 7 lands (.563) and 7 grooves (.576) and a 1 turn in 48” twist. Groove depth is .0065. It is tapered 1 1/8” at the breech to 1” at the muzzle. Open sights consist of a brown steel base with silver blade front sight and brown steel buckhorn style rear sight. It features a long Hawken style tang of brown steel but it is not a hook style breechplug and tang. Barrel is secured to the stock by 2 tang screws that screw into the trigger plate and 2 steel wedges in the forearm. A 7/16” diameter wood ramrod with no tips comes with the gun. The stock is walnut with pewter nosecap and has a Hawken style cheekpiece. All of the metal furniture appears to have been colored by use of a torch to simulate color casehardening and some colors have worn off particularly the thimble and the buttplate. Furniture consist of the percussion lock, lower entry thimble with tang, 2 wedgeplates on each side, trigger guard, double set double phase set triggers, toeplate, buttplate and a teardrop shaped sidelock screw washer inlay. Length of pull is 14”. Weight is 9 1/2 lbs. A Lyman .550 round ball mould without handles comes with this rifle. Overall condition is very good.
